What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition in which an individual experiences persistent unwanted obsessions that are sometimes accompanied by compulsive thoughts or compulsive behaviors.
What are Obsessions?
Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or mental images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause anxiety or distress.
What are Compulsions?
Compulsions are repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing or checking for reassurance) or mental acts (e.g., counting or repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to the rules that must be applied rigidly. Compulsions can also come in the form of thoughts. For example, an individual may feel the compulsion to intentionally keep thinking a certain thought because they believe thinking the thought makes them safer in some way.
Do you have OCD?
It’s not easy for any individual to self-diagnose OCD. If you are experiencing thoughts and behaviors that seem OCD related, it is possible that you have OCD. It is also possible that you are experiencing some distressing obsessions or compulsions for which you should receive professional help despite your symptoms not meeting the threshold for an OCD diagnosis. Alternatively, you may be experiencing anxiety in ways that seem like OCD but that aren’t really related.
In order to determine whether you have OCD and identify the best course of treatment for you, it is important to seek guidance from an experienced OCD specialist.
